Tips On Placing Metatarsal Pads
(Last Updated On: April 4, 2018)

Metatarsal Pads are very useful thing to have especially if you have encountered metatarsalgia at some time in your life. Use of conventional footwear in our daily routine can cause many negative effects on our feet which include heel elevation and toe taper. After repeated use over the period of several years, footwear that are designed with primary focus on fashion rather than comfort can lead to feet becoming shaped liked the footwear themselves. This leads to chronic overextension of the toes and the muscles suffer as well. The muscles under the feet become too weak due to excessive stretches and the ones over the feet become too tight.

This is where metatarsal pads step in and their use can help spread the transverse arch of the foot and eliminating overextension of your toes and help your forefoot pad to return to it’s original position. Now in this publication we are going to discuss on how you can place your metatarsal pads in your footwear the right way. The ball of your foot is the starting point which you will be using to analyze and position the metatarsal pads in your footwear. So let’s get into it.

Gauging with Shoe’s Liner

The first tip you can follow to place your metatarsal pads perfectly and easily is that you look for the liner of your shoe inside of your footwear. The liner of the footwear will easily remove any confusion you have regarding placing the metatarsal pads in your footwear. If your shoes don’t have a liner that can be removed from the footwear or your shoes don’t have a liner to begin with then you should move onto the next step.

If you do have a liner you can easily place the metatarsal pads positioning them to just under the ball of your foot and not under them directly. The already used shoes will have marks identifying the place your foot’s ball places itself when they are worn.

Finding the Ball of Your Foot

The next step you’ll have to do is that you have to find your ball of your foot. You obviously know where the ball of your foot is located but you have to find the spot where the ball of your foot positions itself when you wear your shoe. You can easily find the spot as we have mentioned in the previous point that previously worn shoes will have a spot that will be pressed and the spot on the liner will have the shape of the ball due to that constant pressure of the foot. If you are placing the metatarsal pads on new pair of shoes you can remove the liner and find out the spot of the ball by placing your foot on it and marking the spot.

Placing Metatarsal Pads

Now once you have identified the spot where your foot’s ball places itself inside the shoe you should place the metatarsal pads just behind that spot and the metatarsal pads should be horizontally centered as well so that the pads should not be too much on the outside or on the inside of that spot where the ball of your foot rest.

Trying Your Shoes

Once you have placed the metatarsal pads on the liner, put the liner back into your shoe and make sure they are properly adjusted. After you try your footwear on you will feel that the metatarsal pads will be pressing into the sole of your foot, just behind your foot’s ball. The sensation of this placement should feel good and relaxing on your feet. If this is not the case then you should let the metatarsal pads adjust to your feet for half an hour. If the metatarsal pads still don’t feel comfortable to you then you should remove them adjust them again till you will comfortable about the pads being there and the sensation is relaxing for your feet.

If you are not able to place the metatarsal pads in your footwear perfectly then you should ask your podiatrist to do it for you.
